“In the beginning Saul was humble and modest” (10 mins.)
Some years ago I met two brothers in a congregation who caught my attention. One had given him a Bible study for when he was a person who had a very bad background in society. This person has come so far.
His progress was so amazing that it drew attention, since the brother who gave him Bible study was a ministerial servant, and the one who was the student of this servant, became the elder, the Overseer of the congregation, that is, his A Bible student, he came to lead the congregation, to lead the brother who had taught him to know Jehovah.
But how would someone react if they noticed that happening in their congregation? I was very struck by this brother who gave him the Bible study. He was very humble, very modest, very obedient to his student who was now the presiding overseer of the congregation. Such examples do not go very deep, to our hearts, to knowing brothers who are willing to support everything that Jehovah says, no matter who they use.
That's what we'll discuss in this section of Bible Treasures: "In the beginning Saul was humble and unassuming." And it is that this man whom Jehovah chose had the qualities that the Almighty needed for that moment. What kind of qualities?
Well, let's see for example, what happened once Saul met Samuel on the road, neither of them knowing each other. Although Samuel knew that the one who was coming was the one chosen by Jehovah. Saul mistook him for someone else. When Samuel made Saul see that Jehovah was choosing him, he said a few words.
LET'S READ: 1 Samuel 9:21.
21 Hearing this, Saul replied, “But am I not from Benjamin, the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And is not my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why do you say that to me?"
Saul, with these words, was indicating that he recognized that he was humble and modest, because at the beginning of chapter 9 of the first Samuel characteristics are indicated that no other man in Israel had. He was very attractive. He was very tall. He was a person who could have not only the physical qualities that a man wanted to have, but also Jehovah was seeing the spiritual qualities in him, he had the qualities that Jehovah needed.
When they began to look for him to anoint him as king, to choose him. He showed that he was apparently not the person who should be used by Jehovah.
LET'S READ: 1 Samuel 10:20-22.
20 So Samuel had all the tribes of Israel approach one after another, and the chosen one was the tribe of Benjamin. 21 Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near, family by family. And the chosen family was that of the matritas. Ultimately, the chosen one was Saul son of Kish. But they looked for him and could not find him anywhere. 22 So they inquired of Jehovah: “Is that man here yet?” And Jehovah answered them: "He is there, hidden among the luggage."
Can you imagine an attractive man, chosen by Jehovah, who had the necessary qualities, was hiding, terrified. He found it difficult to accept the position of king. But Jehovah took notice of his heart at that time and that he had the qualities that Jehovah needed to lead his people. That also happens today in our congregations.
It is beautiful when we hear of a new appointment as a ministerial servant or a congregation elder or some other function within the congregation. If you receive this assignment, you may not feel worthy to carry it out. But he is not being chosen for being attractive, he is not being chosen for having many years in the Organization. Jehovah is choosing him because he has the right qualities, humility and modesty.
When one recognizes all this that we are at the service of Jehovah, our way of acting begins to be influenced by the Spirit of God. For example, once it was no doubt very difficult for Saul to begin leading a people who had never had a king. However, people began to protest.
Naturally, not everyone agrees with a decision that is made. When it became known that he was the king and when he was going to lead in battles to liberate Israel from his oppressors, many complained.
LET'S READ: 1 Samuel 10:27.
27 However, some useless men said: “How is this one going to save us?” They despised him and brought him no gift. But he was silent.
It is possible that something like this can sometimes happen unintentionally within the congregation, that someone does not agree with their appointment. Like the case I was telling you about this brother who gave a Bible study, someone who didn't have a good record as a human being.
However, he became overseer of the congregation and he never said anything bad about the elder. He always supported him 100 percent because he recognized that it was Jehovah's decision. But others may not react as well as these who complained about the decision to be chosen Saul for the king as acts, even knowing that some were speaking ill of that decision.
LET'S READ: 1 Samuel 11:13.
But Saul said, "No man will be killed today, because today the Lord has saved Israel."
What a beautiful attitude of humility and modesty. And it is nice to see in our congregations how when a new appointment is given. We all support willingly, recognizing that it is Jehovah who chose that brother.
But, what did Saul also do to show that she was not making decisions for herself, that she always relied on power, on the Holy Spirit of Jehovah?
LET'S READ: 1 Samuel 11:5-7.
5 Saul was coming from the field, leading the cattle. Then he asked: “What's wrong with the people? Why is everyone crying? So they told him what Jabez's men had said. 6 When Saul heard this, the spirit of God filled him with power, and he became very furious. 7 He seized two bulls, cut them into pieces and sent the pieces throughout the territory of Israel with the messengers, who were saying: “This is what will happen to the cattle of those who do not follow Saul and Samuel!” . With that, the people were filled with the fear of Jehovah, and they set out as one man.
That is a great way to show that your responsibilities and abilities come from Jehovah. And that is what we all want. Thank the congregation that our brothers always continue to show humility, that they always continue to show humility, that they always keep showing modesty and that each one of us should fully support them, because by doing so we are supporting Jehovah and Jesus as the head of the congregation.
