He who endures to the end will be saved (Matt. 24:13).
Long-distance runners always look ahead so they don't trip. If they fall, they get up and keep running. They focus not on what tripped them up, but on the goal and the prize they hope to win. In the Christian race, we may stumble many times, either because we say or do something wrong, or because some brother makes a mistake that offends us. This should not surprise us, as we are all imperfect and running on the same narrow path that leads to life. So it is normal that we sometimes clash with each other and have a reason to complain about our companions (Col. 3:13). But let's not focus on what made us stumble, but on the prize that awaits us and keep running. Let's not stay on the ground bitter and complaining, because that way we won't be able to cross the finish line or win the prize.
What advantage do we have, unlike literal brokers?
In ancient Greece, runners had to overcome obstacles such as fatigue and pain. But they could only rely on the training they had received and their own strength. Like them, we too are trained to run in the Christian race. Now, we have an advantage: our source of energy is unlimited, since it comes from Jehovah. If we lean on him, he promises us that he will train us and make us strong (1 Pet. 5:10).
How does 2 Corinthians 12:9, 10 help us deal with difficulties?
The apostle Paul had to endure many hardships. In addition to having to suffer insults and persecution, he sometimes felt weak and had to endure what he called “a thorn in the flesh” (2 Cor. 12:7). But instead of seeing these difficulties as a reason to give up, he saw them as an opportunity to show confidence in Jehovah.—Read 2 Corinthians 12:9, 10. For this reason, Jehovah always helped him.
How will we feel if we follow Paul's example?
Like the apostle Paul, we too may be insulted or persecuted for our faith. Also, we may have to deal with poor health or exhaustion. But if we follow his example, every problem can become an opportunity to feel Jehovah's love and support.
