God will make them firm, he will make them strong (1 Pet. 5:10).

In ancient Greece, runners had to overcome obstacles such as fatigue and pain. But they could only rely on the training they had received and their own strength. Like them, we too are trained to run in the Christian race. Now, we have an advantage: our source of energy is unlimited, since it comes from Jehovah. If we lean on him, he promises us that he will train us and make us strong. The apostle Paul had to endure many hardships. In addition to having to suffer insults and persecution, he sometimes felt weak and had to endure what he called “a thorn in the flesh” (2 Cor. 12:7). But instead of seeing these difficulties as a reason to give up, he saw them as an opportunity to show confidence in Jehovah.​—2 Cor. 12:9, 10. For this reason, Jehovah always helped him. w20. 04 29 paras. 13, 14

Which path should we follow, and why?

In order to win the prize in a literal race, the participants must follow the route set by the organizers. Similarly, if we want to receive the prize of eternal life, we must follow the path, or lifestyle, set for Christians (Acts 20:24; 1 Pet. 2:21). But Satan and his imitators want God's servants to go astray and keep “running with them” (1 Pet. 4:4). They make fun of our lifestyle and say that theirs is better because it gives them freedom. But they are very wrong (2 Pet. 2:19).

What do we learn from Brian's example?

If someone wants to go the way of those who follow Satan's world, he will soon realize that it does not lead to freedom, but to slavery (Rom. 6:16). Let's look at the example of a brother named Brian. When he was a child, his parents tried to teach him to live according to Bible principles. But in adolescence he began to doubt if this life would make him happy. So he decided to follow the lifestyle of those who do what Satan wants. Brian says, “Little did I know then that the freedom I so longed for would lead me into the clutches of addiction.” He was falling into drug use, alcohol abuse and immoral behavior. He adds: “Over the years I tried harder drugs and ended up enslaved to several of them. I got to the point of selling drugs to pay for my addictions.” Time after, He decided to abide by Jehovah's standards. She changed his lifestyle and was baptized in 2001. He now runs the Christian race and is truly happy.*

According to Matthew 7:13, 14, what two paths are before us?

It is very important that we choose the right path. Satan wants us to stop running on the narrow road that “leads to life” and turn to the broad road where most people in this world go. This route is easier, but it “leads to destruction” (read Matthew 7:13, 14). If we do not want anything to lead us astray, we must trust in Jehovah and listen to what he tells us.
