Stop conforming to this system (Rom. 12:2).
Today, millions of families are broken by divorce. On the other hand, there are families in which its members continue to live together but can act almost like strangers. A family counselor says, “Mom, dad, and kids are disconnected from each other and connected to a computer screen, tablet, phone, or video game console. Although they live under the same roof, they hardly know each other. We do not want to be infected by the lack of love in this world. Rather, we should cultivate tender affection not only for our relatives, but also for our brothers in the congregation (Rom. 12:10). What is "tender affection"? In Greek, it is a term that refers to the love we feel for members of our family whom we see as close friends. And that is the feeling that we should have for our brothers in the congregation, who are our spiritual family. If we show tender affection, we help each other to continue serving Jehovah together.—Mic. 2:12. w21.01 20 paras. 1, 2
What is one factor that might have prevented Jonathan and David from becoming friends?
The friendship between Jonathan and David draws more attention if we think about all the factors that could have prevented it from arising. For example, Jonathan was about 30 years older than David. So he might have concluded that he had nothing in common with such a young and inexperienced boy. Still, he never viewed or treated David as if he were someone inferior.
Why do you think Jonathan was such a good friend to David?
Furthermore, Jonathan could have become jealous of David and insisted on defending that he had the right to be the next king because he was the son of Saul (1 Sam. 20:31). But instead, Jonathan was humble and loyal to Jehovah, so he wholeheartedly supported Jehovah's decision to give David the throne. He was also loyal to David, although this made Saul very furious (1 Sam. 20:32-34).
Why do we know that Jonathan did not see David as a rival?
Jonathan's tender affection for David prevented him from seeing him as a rival. Jonathan was a skilled archer and a brave warrior. He and his father were said to be “swifter than eagles” and “stronger than lions” (2 Sam. 1:22, 23). So Jonathan could have boasted about his military exploits. But he was never competitive or embittered by David's successes. On the contrary: he admired him for his courage and his trust in Jehovah. In fact, Jonathan began to care for David precisely when David killed Goliath. How can we show that tender affection for our brothers?
