I have made your name known to them (John 17:26).

When we defend the name of Jehovah, we are following the example of Jesus Christ. Jesus made known his Father's name not only by using it, but also by teaching what Jehovah is really like. For example, when the Pharisees portrayed Jehovah as a demanding, uncompromising, cruel, and ruthless God, Jesus helped people see that his Father is reasonable, patient, loving, and compassionate. He also helped people to know Jehovah by his perfect way of imitating his Father's qualities in his daily life.​—John 14:9. Like Jesus, we can share what we know about Jehovah and talk about how loving and kind he is. Thus we refute the lies and calumnies of his enemies. We sanctify Jehovah's name and help people see him as holy. With our words and actions, we show people what Jehovah is really like. We vindicate his name by helping people free themselves from misconceptions they may have about God. w20.06 6 paras. 17, 18

According to Genesis 2:16, 17 and 3:1-5, what did Jehovah tell Adam and Eve, and how did Satan distort the truth?

(Read Genesis 2:16, 17; 3:1-5). Using a snake, Satan asked Eve: "Did God really tell you that you can't eat from all the trees in the garden?" He poisoned the question with a subtle lie. What God had said was that they could eat from all the trees except one. Adam and Eve must have had an extraordinary variety of trees to choose from (Gen. 2:9). It is clear that Jehovah was very generous with them. But he told them that there was a tree that they should not eat from. So, with his question, Satan distorted the truth and implied that God was not generous. Eve may have wondered if God was denying her something good.

What slander did Satan launch directly against God's name, and what were the results?

At that time, Eve still saw Jehovah as her Ruler. In fact, he responded to Satan by citing the clear instructions that God had given them. He even added that they should not even touch the tree. He knew that God had warned them that if they disobeyed, they would die. Then, Satan stopped being subtle and said to him, “You will by no means die” (Gen. 3:2-4). That was a direct slander against the name of God, because in reality he was telling him that Jehovah had lied. Thus Satan became a devil, a slanderer. Eve was completely deceived and believed Satan (1 Tim. 2:14). She trusted him more than Jehovah, and that led her to make the worst possible decision: to disobey God and eat the fruit that he had forbidden her. Then, he gave Adam of the fruit (Gen. 3:6).
