What Paul did
The apostle Paul helps some people in Athens reason.
VIDEO: Paul preaches to the people of Athens
1. Watch the VIDEO or read Acts 17:22, 23. Then discuss the following questions:
How did Paul feel when he saw that Athens was full of idols? (See Acts 17:16).
Well the text is very clear, Paul was deeply indignant and possibly very upset when he saw that the entire city was full of idols. It was an idolatrous city, that was his feeling.
How did the apostle Paul demonstrate tact when he preached to the Athenians?Although, we already saw that the idolatry that he had seen caused him indignation and annoyance, he used that point as an introduction to capture the attention of the Athenians, and he even used the inscription that he gave to an unknown God, to mention to them that he wanted to talk precisely about that God. So he managed to have the attention of all those people and gave the message that he wanted so much.
What do we learn from Paul's example?
Point 2 summarizes that we are more likely to be heard if we carefully choose what we say, how we say it, and when we say it. It is an interesting point, because although what we see in the activity of the ministry, whether informally or in preaching from house to house, although that affects us, bothers us, however, that is what we could use it to give an introduction that captures people's attention and also of course, not reflect our annoyance in our voice or our face, but rather use what we have seen to have a conversation with the water of the house.
