The Watchtower Study, “Article 8”, April 28, May 4, 2025, Jehovah's Forgiveness: How to Imitate Him, Answers.

“The Lord forgave you generously, so do the same” (COL. 3:13).

1, 2. a) When is it possible that we find it difficult to forgive?

Forgiveness does not mean that the pain goes away immediately or that what happened has no consequences. The Bible shows that even faithful servants like Joseph and Stephen faced difficult situations where they could have held a grudge, but chose to forgive.

Denise did the same; Instead of feeding his suffering with resentment, he leaned on Jehovah to find comfort, since resentment can affect our relationship with Jehovah by distancing us from his love and peace.

Therefore, although forgiveness may be difficult, it is essential for our emotional and spiritual well-being. Jehovah gives us the strength to do so, especially when we turn to Him in prayer.

1, 2. b) How did Denise show that she had forgiven?

Forgiveness does not mean ignoring pain, but deciding not to hold on to resentment. Denise understood that the driver did not intend to cause the accident, and instead of demanding punishment, she chose to show compassion.

The Bible mentions similar cases, such as when Jesus asked his Father to forgive those who would end his life. Denise chose that path and, as a result, not only found peace, but she impacted those who listened to her.

3. What helped Denise forgive?

Denise was able to forgive because she meditated on Jehovah's forgiveness. Micah 7:18 says, "What God is like you, who forgives error and overlooks the transgression of the rest of his inheritance? He will not remain angry forever, because he loves to show loyal love." This verse highlights the mercy of Jehovah, who is willing to forgive those who repent.

Denise applied this principle by remembering that just as she needed Jehovah's forgiveness, she also needed to forgive others. Being grateful for God's forgiveness motivated her to show mercy, instead of being consumed by bitterness or resentment.

4. What does Jehovah want us to do? (Ephesians 4:32).

Jehovah does not ask us for anything that He himself does not do. His forgiveness is immense and is based on his loyal love. Forgiveness strengthens peace and unity among Christians; Therefore, if we want to have God's mercy, we must strive to forgive.

Forgiveness does not mean justifying the offense or minimizing the pain, but it does mean freeing ourselves from resentment and bitterness. Psalm 86:5 teaches us that Jehovah is good and willing to forgive, which motivates us to develop the same attitude. Additionally, Luke 17:4 shows that we must be willing to forgive repeatedly when someone repents.

DON'T IGNORE YOUR FEELINGS

5. How is it possible that we feel when someone offends us? (Proverbs 12:18).

Words have a powerful impact on our emotions. Unkind words can cause lasting emotional scars, but forgiveness helps us free ourselves from the weight of resentment.

The pain we feel when we are hurt is natural, especially if it comes from someone close to us, like a friend or family member. Psalm 55:12-14 shows that even King David suffered intensely when he was betrayed by someone he trusted.

Proverbs 12:18 compares hurtful words to a sword, indicating that they can cause significant emotional damage. In some cases, the wound is even so deep that it can generate resentment if not handled correctly.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT

When someone offends us, we can feel emotional pain as intense as that of a physical blow, especially if the offense comes from a loved one. The emotional wound will not heal if we ignore our feelings, just like a dagger that remains stuck without being removed.

6. What can be the first reaction when someone offends us?

When faced with an offense, the most common thing is that we get angry. The Bible recognizes that this is natural, but warns us not to let anger control us. Psalm 4:4 advises us: "If you are angry, do not sin; think in your heart when you are in bed and be silent."

This reminds us that it is important to calm down and think before acting, since initial anger may be involuntary, but remaining angry is a decision. Therefore, the Bible encourages us to control our emotions.

Proverbs 29:11 says, "A fool gives vent to his anger, but a wise man restrains it." This teaches us that Christian maturity is demonstrated when we learn to manage our reactions calmly and wisely.

Getting angry is a reaction, but staying angry is a choice.

7. What other emotions are we likely to feel when someone hurts us?

Emotional pain is complex and can affect our self-esteem and relationships. But when someone hurts us, anger is not the only emotion we can experience; It is also common to feel abandonment, sadness, betrayal or even a deep sense of not being loved.

Ann's example reminds us that emotional pain does not always come from a direct attack, but from the feeling of loss or rejection.

Georget, for her part, felt great disappointment and sadness when she discovered her husband's infidelity. Their pain was even greater because their relationship had been based on years of friendship and service to Jehovah.

Lastly, Naomi experienced deception and betrayal when she learned that her husband secretly watched pornography. These examples show that emotional damage can take many forms.

8. a) What are some of the reasons why we should forgive?

Forgiving is not always easy, but there are important reasons to do so. First, because we love Jehovah and He asks us to forgive others. Furthermore, refusing to forgive can cause us to act impulsively and even affect our emotional and physical health. Proverbs 14:30 says that “a calm heart is life to the body, but envy is rottenness to the bones.”

Christine, a sister mentioned in the article, says that when she allows herself to be dominated by pain, she feels more irritable, neglects her diet and her relationships with others. Therefore, forgiving helps us move forward without getting caught up in negative feelings.

8. b) What benefits do we obtain by forgiving? (See the sidebar “What if what someone did caused me trauma?”)

Forgiveness does not mean minimizing the harm that has been caused to us or allowing someone to continue hurting us. Rather, it is a way to free ourselves from resentment and anger, which helps us heal and move forward.

The box mentions that resentment can empower the person who hurt us by keeping us trapped in the pain. However, by letting go of those negative feelings, we benefit emotionally and spiritually.

Another benefit of forgiveness is that it helps us feel calmer. Studies have shown that prolonged resentment can cause anxiety, depression and health problems. On the other hand, those who manage to forgive usually experience less stress and greater well-being. Psalm 55:22 encourages us to cast our burden on Jehovah, for He is a perfect judge.

9. Why should we get rid of resentment?

Getting rid of resentment helps us regain peace and prevent bitterness from taking over our hearts. Even if the person who hurt us never asks for forgiveness, we can choose not to allow their action to continue affecting us. Georgette, mentioned in the paragraph, managed to free herself from the resentment and anger she felt towards her ex-husband, which allowed her to find peace.

This shows that forgiveness not only benefits the other person, but mainly the person who grants it. Holding on to resentment only harms us emotionally and spiritually. Instead, as we see in Proverbs 11:17, when we decide to let go of anger, we give ourselves a gift, as we can move forward and enjoy life again.

10. Why do we need time to heal emotional wounds? (See also images).

Healing emotional wounds is a process that requires time, just like recovering from a physical injury, and in the images we observe this process. Ecclesiastes 3:3 mentions that there is “a time for healing,” indicating that the healing process is not instantaneous, but gradual.

First Peter 1:22 also emphasizes the importance of loving with a pure heart, implying that sincere forgiveness is only possible when we have worked through our emotions and are ready to let go of the pain.

Therefore, recognizing that we need time to heal helps us not rush or force ourselves to feel something we are not yet ready to experience. With patience, prayer, and Jehovah's help, we can overcome pain and achieve peace.

ILLUSTRATION

Images of an injured brother who recovers over time. 1. The paramedics take him away in an ambulance. 2. Receive physical therapy to walk again. 3. Walk upright and confident.

When someone suffers a serious accident, they need proper care and time to heal. The same thing happens with emotional wounds. (See paragraph 10).

11. How can prayer help us forgive?

Prayer is a powerful tool that helps us forgive. When we pray to Jehovah, we can ask him to give us the strength to leave resentment behind.

Hannah's example illustrates how prayer can change our attitude. She asked Jehovah to forgive everyone in her family for their mistakes, which led her to take the step of writing to her father and his new wife to tell them that she forgave them. Although it was not easy, this action allowed him to imitate Jehovah's forgiveness and maintain hope that his family would grow closer to God.

When we pray for help to forgive, we are showing that we trust in Jehovah and his justice. Additionally, prayer helps us replace negative feelings with love and understanding.

12. Why should we trust in Jehovah and not our feelings? (Proverbs 3:5, 6).

Jehovah always knows what is best for us, unlike our feelings, which can be deceptive and changeable. Jehovah's wisdom is perfect and guides us toward spiritual and emotional well-being.

Proverbs 3:5, 6 advises us not to rely on our own understanding, but to trust fully in Jehovah. If we base our decisions only on how we feel, we could reach erroneous conclusions and stray from divine principles.

Naomi's example illustrates this. She felt that she was right not to forgive her husband and thought that Jehovah understood her pain. However, over time he realized that even though Jehovah understands our feelings, that does not mean that he approves of them. He wants us to forgive because He knows that doing so will benefit us.

CULTIVATE POSITIVE EMOTIONS

13. According to Romans 12:18-21, what must we do?

These verses teach us that, to the extent it is up to us, we should do everything we can to be at peace with others. This means not giving in to anger or seeking revenge, but rather responding with kindness and mercy, leaving the reckoning in Jehovah's hands.

Forgiveness is not just about deciding not to talk about the problem, but about replacing anger with mercy and resentment with forgiveness.  Jesus also highlighted the importance of reconciliation in Matthew 5:23 and 24, showing that if we have something against a brother, we must take the initiative to make peace.

By following this advice, we show that we trust in Jehovah and his justice, which allows us to feel peace in our hearts and strengthen our relationship with Him.

14. What should we strive to do, and why?

We must strive to see the person who offended us as Jehovah sees him. Jehovah, in his great love and mercy, chooses to focus on people's good qualities instead of their mistakes.

Our way of seeing others influences how we react to their mistakes. If we only look for flaws, we will easily fuel resentment; But if we focus on the virtues and positive aspects, our hearts will be more willing to forgive.

As Brother Jarrod mentioned, when you compare someone's mistakes with all the good things they have, it becomes easier for them to forgive. Jehovah encourages us to follow this principle, because by doing so we imitate his mercy and benefit spiritually by preventing resentment from affecting our relationship with Him.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT

We should strive to see the person who offended us as Jehovah sees him, highlighting his good qualities. By focusing on the positive, it will be easier to forgive her, since, as the example says: if we look for something good, we will find it.

15. Why is it good for you to tell the person that you forgave them?

Telling the person that we have forgiven them is important because it reinforces reconciliation and helps heal both those who forgive and those who are forgiven.

Naomi's case illustrates this point. When her husband asked her if she had forgiven him, she tried to answer, but realized she still held resentment. However, when she was finally able to say, "I forgive you," she felt a deep peace and her husband experienced great relief. Additionally, this action helped restore trust in their marriage, strengthening their relationship.

Verbalized forgiveness can have a powerful impact, providing comfort and closing emotional wounds. It also allows the other person to feel Christian love in action.

16. What have you learned about forgiveness?

Forgiveness is a command from Jehovah, but it is not always easy to apply. However, by following the right steps, we can achieve it. To do this, it is important not to ignore our feelings, but to recognize them. We also need to give ourselves time to heal emotionally and ask for Jehovah's help in overcoming resentment.

Another key point is to trust in Jehovah instead of being guided by our feelings alone. At times we may feel that we cannot forgive, but by meditating on how Jehovah forgives us and by sincerely praying to him, our hearts can soften.

Finally, cultivating positive emotions is essential. Seeing the person who has offended us as Jehovah sees him or her, focusing on his or her good qualities, will help us leave resentment behind. Forgiving not only benefits the other person, but it gives us peace and allows us to move forward without the burden of resentment.

THINK ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF FORGIVING

17. How does forgiving benefit us?

Forgiving brings us many benefits, both spiritual, emotional and physical.

First, by forgiving, we imitate Jehovah, who is merciful and willing to forgive those who repent. Second, when we forgive, we show that we appreciate the forgiveness that Jehovah has given us.

Jesus taught in Matthew 6:12 that we should ask God to forgive us. This reminds us that our own forgiveness depends on our willingness to forgive others.

Finally, forgiveness contributes to our emotional and physical health. Resentment and resentment can cause stress and affect our well-being. On the other hand, when we forgive, friendships and coexistence with our brothers become stronger.

18, 19. What can happen if we forgive?

When we forgive, we may experience unexpected benefits, both for ourselves and for the other person. An example of this is the case of Denise, who forgave the man who caused the accident she was involved in, and as a result, the man began studying the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses.

This is a clear example of how forgiveness not only helps us free ourselves from resentment, but can also touch the lives of those who hurt us, leading them to deep reflection and positive change in their lives.

Forgiveness is one of the most worthwhile things, because it helps us heal and live at peace with ourselves. Furthermore, following Jehovah's example in this regard strengthens our relationship with Him and brings us closer to true happiness.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

Why shouldn't you ignore your feelings?

You should not ignore your feelings, because you will not be able to heal your emotional wounds if you do not admit what you feel. Acknowledging your emotions is the first step to overcoming pain.

What will help you turn the page?

It will help you turn the page by letting some time pass, allowing you to heal emotionally and be ready to forgive from the heart, just as it takes time to heal after an accident.

What can you do to cultivate positive emotions?

You can strive to see the person who offended you as Jehovah sees him or her, focusing on that person's strengths rather than his or her faults, which will make forgiveness easier.
