Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2025

Those who put their hope in the Lord will regain their strength. They will not grow weary (Isa. 40:31).

As Israel’s judge, Gideon had to put himself at great physical strain. When the Midianites fled in a night battle, he pursued them from the Jezreel Valley to the Jordan River (Judges 7:22). What did he do then? Did he stop? Of course not! Although he and his 300 men were tired, they crossed the river and continued the pursuit. Eventually, they caught up with the Midianites and defeated them (Judges 8:4–12). Gideon trusted in Jehovah to give him strength, and Jehovah did not fail him (Judges 6:14, 34). On one occasion, Gideon and his men pursued two Midianite kings on foot who were apparently fleeing on camels (Judges 8:12, 21). But with Jehovah’s help, these persevering Israelites caught up with them and defeated them. Older people today can also trust in Jehovah, the God who “never grows weary or exhausted.” He will give them strength whenever they need it. (Isa. 40:28, 29) w23.06 6 par. 14; 7 par. 16.

What can test the endurance of an elderly person?

Caring for the congregation and family can be physically, mentally, and emotionally draining for an elder. How can elders who feel this way follow Gideon's example?

What helped Gideon endure?

Trust that Jehovah will give you strength. That is what Gideon did, and Jehovah did not fail him. (Judges 6:14, 34) On one occasion, Gideon and his men pursued two Midianite kings on foot who appeared to be fleeing on camels. (Judges 8:12, 21) But with Jehovah’s help, these persevering Israelites caught up with them and defeated them. Elders today can also trust in Jehovah, the God who “never grows weary or weary.” He will give them strength whenever they need it (Read Isaiah 40:28-31).

What can the elders be sure of? (Isaiah 40:28-31; see also the photo.)

Let's look at the experience of Matthew, a member of a Hospital Liaison Committee. What helps him endure? He says: “I have experienced firsthand what Philippians 4:13 says. Many times, when I am tired and feel like I can't go on, I pray earnestly to Jehovah, pleading with Him to give me the physical and mental strength I need to support the brothers and sisters. In those moments, I feel Jehovah giving me a burst of energy to endure.” Like Gideon, the elders go out of their way to lovingly shepherd the flock despite the obstacles. Of course, they must be modest and realize that they cannot always do everything they would like to. But, in any case, the elders trust that Jehovah will hear their prayers and give them the strength to carry on. (Ps. 116:1; Phil. 2:13)

Based on what we have seen, how can the elders imitate Gideon?

As we have seen, elders can learn much from Gideon's example. They should be modest and humble when accepting greater responsibilities and when receiving criticism or praise. They should also be obedient and courageous, especially as the end of this system approaches. And they should trust that no matter what happens, Jehovah will give them the strength to endure. We certainly greatly appreciate and “always hold in high esteem” these hardworking shepherds. (Phil. 2:29)
