Speech (5 mins.) ijwyp article 23. Title: Why do they have to go on about me? (th lesson 13).
Why do you have to go around talking about me?
Have you ever felt hurt after discovering someone has been talking about you behind your back? Maybe you've even asked yourself that same question: Why do they have to go around talking about me? It hurts and can be very upsetting, especially if the person who spoke badly is someone we trusted.
Today we'll reflect on how to react when others speak negatively about us. We'll look at why it's important to handle these situations well and what we can do to protect our peace of mind and our reputation.
First point: Why do people speak badly of others?
There are many reasons. Sometimes they do it just for fun, to have something to talk about. Other times they do it out of insecurity: they seek to feel superior by talking about others' flaws. It can even be a way to get attention or fit in with a group.
But understanding this can help us not take it so personally. Not every comment made about us is meant to harm us. And even if it is sometimes, we can choose how to respond.
Second point: What can we do when we find out?
It depends on the type of comment and the damage it has caused. In many cases, it's best to simply turn a deaf ear. Not everything deserves a response. Let's look at what the Bible says.
LET'S READ ECCLESIASTES 7:9
"Do not be quick in your spirit to feel offended, because feeling offended rests in the breast of fools."
This advice encourages us to remain calm. Sometimes, silence is wiser than a hasty response. If the comment is superficial or unimportant, letting it go can avoid unnecessary arguments and help us maintain peace.
But what if the comment is serious? If it jeopardizes our reputation, our job, our friendships, or even our position in the congregation, it may be necessary to speak directly to the person. But before doing so, it's a good idea to think carefully about how to approach the situation.
It's best not to react immediately. We can wait a bit, consider what we say, and even seek the advice of someone mature and balanced. The Bible encourages us to be wise in dealing with these situations.
LET'S READ PROVERBS 18:13
"He who answers a question before hearing the facts is a fool and makes himself look ridiculous."
We don't want to rush into anything or make unfounded accusations. First, it's important to make sure the information is true and, if so, find the most peaceful and respectful way to approach the person who said it.
Third point: What is the effect of acting in this way?
When we respond calmly and intelligently, we protect our reputation, demonstrate maturity, and, in the long run, the truth always comes out. Even if others continue to speak, our actions will speak louder than rumors.
Furthermore, we respond to the problem without letting it rob us of our peace of mind. We let go of our emotional reaction and take control of the situation. And over time, people see who truly acts with integrity.
Conclusion
So, the next time you hear someone talking badly about you, remember: you can choose how you react. You can choose to be part of the solution, not the problem. You may choose to ignore it, or you may choose to speak up calmly. But in both cases, you will be acting intelligently and wisely.
Let's think: Am I reacting calmly? Am I giving things time to clear up? Am I acting the way I would want to be acted toward if I were the one who made the mistake?
Applying these principles can make a big difference. It will allow us to live more peacefully, even in a world filled with rumors and uncontrolled talk.
