Do not quench the fire of the spirit (1 Thess. 5:19).
What can we do to receive holy spirit from Jehovah? We can ask him for it, study his Word, and remain united with his organization. If we do this, we will cultivate “the fruitage of the spirit.” (Gal. 5:22, 23) For Jehovah to grant us his spirit, our conduct and thoughts must be clean. If we allow impure thoughts to take root within us and are driven by them, we will lose his spirit. (1 Thess. 4:7, 8)
What else should we keep in mind? Paul said: “Do not despise the prophecies.” (1 Thess. 5:20) In this verse, the word “prophecies” refers to the messages God gives through his spirit. Among them are messages about the day of Jehovah and how close it is. We don’t think that the day of Jehovah is far away or that we won’t see Armageddon. On the contrary, we keep the day of Jehovah very much in mind. That’s why we place great importance on our conduct and perform “deeds of devotion to God.” (2 Pet. 3:11, 12)
What can we do to get Jehovah to give us holy spirit?
“Do not quench the fire of the Spirit” (1 Thess. 5:19). Paul compared the Holy Spirit to a fire burning within us. Because of that spirit, we are filled with fervor and a desire to do what is right and have the strength to work hard for Jehovah. (Rom. 12:11) How can we ask Jehovah to give us Holy Spirit? We can ask him for it, study his Word, and join his organization. If we do this, we will cultivate “the fruitage of the Spirit.” (Gal. 5:22, 23)
What must we do so that no one deceives us? (1 Thessalonians 5:21)
In the near future, God's enemies will somehow declare "Peace and safety!" (1 Thess. 5:3). Demon-inspired messages will begin to circulate everywhere, deceiving almost everyone (Rev. 16:13, 14). And us? Will we be deceived? That won't happen if we follow this advice: "Test everything" (read 1 Thessalonians 5:21). The Greek word translated "test" here has to do with confirming the authenticity of precious metals.
We need to do something similar: check whether what we hear or read is true. It was important for the Thessalonians to do this, but it will be even more important for us to do so as the great tribulation approaches. Instead of being naive and believing everything we are told, we use our thinking skills to compare what we read or hear with what the Bible and Jehovah's organization say. Then no cunning messages from demons will deceive us. (Prov. 14:15; 1 Tim. 4:1)
What wonderful hope do we have, and what should we do now?
We know that Jehovah's servants as a group will survive the great tribulation, but we do not know what will become of each of us tomorrow (James 4:14). Whether we survive the great tribulation or die beforehand, Jehovah will reward us with eternal life if we are faithful. Anointed Christians will be with Christ in heaven, and the other sheep will live in paradise on earth. In the meantime, let us focus on our wonderful hope and always be prepared for Jehovah's day.
