Congregation Bible Study (30 min.) wcg chap. 14.
Analysis of chapter 14. Rahab: She put Jehovah above her own people
What would I say?
In what ways did Rahab demonstrate courage?
Rahab showed courage by siding with Jehovah, even though it meant risking her own life. She hid the two Israelite spies, deceived the king's men to protect them, and kept their mission secret. Furthermore, she demonstrated faith by following the spies' instructions, tying the scarlet cord in her window, and gathering her family inside her house for their protection.
Investigate a little more
1. Describe what Rahab's life must have been like in Jericho (w13 1/11 12, 13).
Rahab’s life must have been very difficult and humiliating, for she was a prostitute in a city whose inhabitants practiced horrific things. Although she lived in a city surrounded by palm trees and seemingly prosperous, she probably found no true happiness or dignity in her lifestyle. However, when she heard what Jehovah had done for Israel, she was filled with hope for a better life and for drawing closer to a just, pure, and good God.
2. How do we know that the spies did not go to Rahab's house with immoral intentions? (it “Prostitute” para. 16).
We know that the spies did not go to Rahab's house with immoral intentions, since their objective was to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, especially Jericho, before the Israelites conquered it. Furthermore, the Bible highlights Rahab's faith and good deeds, and shows that Jehovah blessed her by protecting her and her family. Therefore, everything indicates that the spies went to her house to fulfill their assigned mission, and not with immoral intentions.
3. Why did Rahab have flax stalks arranged in rows on the roof, and what was the flax used for? (it “Flax, I” pars. 2-4).
Rahab hung flax stalks in rows on the roof to dry in the sun before processing them. Flax was used to make high-quality yarn and fabric, which were used to make clothing, nets, lamp wicks, and other textiles. Rahab likely also used it to make everyday items and possibly to earn some income.
4. Why was it not wrong for Rahab to deceive the king’s men? (w04 1/12 9 par. 1)
It was not wrong for Rahab to deceive the king’s men because they were trying to capture Jehovah’s servants, who were under no obligation to reveal any information to them. Rahab acted with prudence and God-fearing to protect the lives of the spies. Her example teaches us that it is right to be prudent and protect Jehovah’s servants when hostile people want to harm them.
Think about the lessons
Why did Rahab need courage to abandon her immoral lifestyle and worship Jehovah with the Israelites? What can Bible students learn from her example?
Rahab needed a lot of courage because she had to abandon her life as a prostitute, break with the idolatry of her people, and risk suffering disapproval or even persecution from her neighbors and the authorities for siding with the Israelites and becoming a servant of Jehovah.
Those who study the Bible can learn that, regardless of their past, Jehovah is willing to forgive and accept those who demonstrate genuine faith. Rahab’s example teaches them that they must have the courage to abandon practices that God does not approve of and trust that he will bless them and give them a loving spiritual family. Furthermore, they can be confident that Jehovah sees what is in the heart and can use those who are sincere to accomplish his purpose.
The Bible tells us not to lie. However, there may be enemies of God’s people who pressure us to reveal confidential information about our brothers and sisters. In such cases, what can we learn from Rahab’s example? (Prov. 11:13; Eccl. 3:7; Eph. 4:25)
From Rahab's example, we learn that we must act with prudence and know when to remain silent. Although Christians always speak the truth, we are not obligated to reveal confidential information to people who seek to harm our brothers and sisters. Therefore, we must protect information that could endanger their lives or safety, be loyal, and rely on biblical principles. Furthermore, we must have the courage to protect our brothers and sisters, even if it involves personal sacrifices.
In what other ways can you copy Rahab's example of courage?
We can emulate Rahab’s courageous example in three ways: first, by standing firm in our faith and speaking openly about Jehovah without fear of what others might think. Second, by praying and patiently striving to help our family members come to know Jehovah and draw closer to him. And third, by demonstrating our faith through actions, such as attending meetings, sharing in the preaching work, and loyally supporting the congregation, trusting that Jehovah will protect his faithful servants.

What does this account teach me about Jehovah?
This account teaches me that Jehovah shows no partiality, but sees what is in the heart and values sincere faith, regardless of a person's past or background. It also teaches me that he is merciful and willing to forgive those who truly repent. Furthermore, I learn that Jehovah rewards faith and courage, and never abandons those who are loyal to him and trust fully in his power to save them.
How does this account relate to Jehovah's purpose and the main theme of the Bible?
This account relates to Jehovah’s purpose because it shows how he directs events to accomplish his Messianic purpose. Rahab, through her faith and courage, was saved and became part of the genealogical line of King David and Jesus Christ. Furthermore, the victory over Jericho demonstrated that Jehovah is the only true God and that the false gods of the nations had no power against him.
Finally, the rescue of Rahab and her family reminds us that Jehovah will protect people of all nations who demonstrate a right attitude during the great tribulation.
What would I like to ask Rahab when she is resurrected?
I would like to ask Rahab how she felt when she first heard the accounts of the miracles Jehovah performed at the Red Sea and how she came to have such great faith in him. I would also like to know where she got the courage and composure to hide the spies and answer the authorities in Jericho.
In addition, I would ask her what prayers she said during those difficult times and how she felt when she saw the walls of Jericho fall and realized that Jehovah had fulfilled his promise to save her and her family.
