Jehovah demands exclusive devotion (Deut. 4:24).
Jehovah considers pure worship very important because he wants his servants to be faithful to him and worship him in the right way. Faithful kings strove to maintain pure worship and encouraged the people to do the same. In contrast, many unfaithful kings abandoned Jehovah’s Law and promoted false worship. This led them to commit injustices and other serious sins. Since the Israelites were dedicated to Jehovah, worshipping other gods was like committing spiritual adultery, for it meant being unfaithful to him.
What was the main difference between faithful kings and unfaithful kings?
The main difference was that faithful kings worshipped Jehovah exclusively, practiced pure worship, and encouraged the people to do the same. Although they sometimes made mistakes, they strove to eliminate idolatry from the nation. In contrast, unfaithful kings turned away from Jehovah and permitted or promoted false worship.
Why did Jehovah consider King Ahab to have been unfaithful?
Jehovah considered King Ahab unfaithful because, although he occasionally showed humility and did good things, he allowed himself to be influenced by his wife Jezebel and promoted false worship. Most seriously, he never repented of this sin, for he strayed from the pure worship that Jehovah expected of him.
Why did Jehovah consider Rehoboam to be an unfaithful king?
For although he did many good things, once his reign was established, he abandoned Jehovah’s Law and began to practice false worship. Sometimes he worshipped Jehovah and other times idols, instead of remaining faithful to pure worship.
What did the vast majority of infidel kings do?
The vast majority of unfaithful kings supported false religion in some way, thus moving away from the pure worship that Jehovah expected of them.
Why does Jehovah place so much importance on pure worship?
Jehovah places such importance on pure worship because kings were responsible for helping the people worship him correctly. Furthermore, false worship led to injustice and other serious sins. Since the Israelites were dedicated to Jehovah, worshipping false gods was like committing spiritual adultery, for it meant being unfaithful to him and sinning directly and personally.
REFLECTION
Today’s text teaches us that Jehovah not only looks at the good things we do, but also at whether we are faithful to him and give him the worship he deserves. The examples of Ahab and Rehoboam remind us that it is not enough to do some good things if, at the same time, we neglect our relationship with Jehovah. Therefore, we must protect our worship, avoid anything that could distance us from him, and make sure that our decisions demonstrate that our devotion is exclusively to Jehovah. In this way, we will show how much we love him and our desire to remain faithful to him at all times.
