I will not be resentful forever (Jer. 3:12).

Jehovah is a compassionate God who wants those who have strayed from him to repent and return. Therefore, he takes the initiative to help them, just as he did with the Israelites and as illustrated in the parable of the prodigal son. Elders imitate this compassion when they treat those who have been removed from the congregation with love and mercy, helping them return without hindering them. Jehovah assures them that if they sincerely repent, he will forgive them and love them of his own free will.

How do elders imitate Jehovah’s compassion in dealing with a person who has been removed from the congregation? (Jeremiah 3:12)

The elders imitate Jehovah’s compassion by taking the initiative to help the one who has been removed from the congregation, showing their heartfelt desire for the person to repent and return to Jehovah. Instead of waiting for the person to make the first step, they treat the individual with love and mercy, removing all obstacles to their return, just as Jehovah did with the Israelites.

How does the parable of the prodigal son help us to better understand Jehovah's compassion? (Luke 15:7)

The parable of the prodigal son helps us understand that Jehovah is very compassionate and sincerely desires that those who have strayed from him return. Just as the father ran to embrace his son without waiting for him to ask for forgiveness, Jehovah takes the initiative to help those who have strayed. Moreover, when someone repents and returns to him, he feels great joy, just as the angels in heaven do.

What loving invitation does Jehovah extend to those who have committed a serious sin?

Jehovah lovingly invites them to repent and return to him. He assures them that if they sincerely repent, he will heal their unfaithfulness and love them of his own free will. This shows that he does not want to hold a grudge against them, but rather to help them regain their friendship with him.

REFLECTION

Today’s text teaches us that Jehovah is not quick to give up on a person, but sincerely desires that they regain their friendship with him. His example motivates us to be compassionate, not to judge harshly those who have strayed, and to show them, through our words and actions, that they can return to Jehovah. It also reminds us that if we ever commit a serious sin, we should never think that Jehovah does not want to forgive us; on the contrary, he lovingly invites us to repent and return to him.
