In our reading of the Bible we find a word that is repeated several times, this word appears about 280 times in the Hebrew Scriptures, and more than 80 of those cases occur in the first five books of the Bible. word we are talking about ?, because it is the word pact, what does pact mean ?, well the work Insight defines it as an agreement between two or more people to undertake a certain action or refrain from carrying it out; its synonyms are agreement or contract.

For the Israelites, a covenant was a very important deal and in fact it was one of the central themes of pure worship and in their daily life and precisely on this occasion we will analyze one of those deals, Joshua's covenant with the Gibeonites and we will also see that we can learn from that pact.

Let's put ourselves in situation first, when the nations of Canaan found out what had happened in Jericho decided to unite to fight against the Israelites, but the inhabitants of Gibeon came up with an idea, let's read that in Joshua 9: 3, 4, 6 Here we can see that the Gibeonites put on worn clothes, went to see Joshua and told him that they came from a distant land, that they had heard about Jehovah and that is why they wanted the Israelites to make a covenant with them.

The response of the Israelites to that proposition is found in Joshua 9:15, some time later Joshua discovered that in reality the Gibeonites were not from a distant land, but were from Canaan. What did Joshua do? He kept his promise and did nothing to them. Why did he keep the pact despite what happened?

For the Gibeonites were Canaanites and the Israelites had to destroy them, but the covenant that Israel entered into with them imposed such an inevitable obligation on them that they had to be faithful to their word and that is why they allowed the Gibeonites to remain alive by making them woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly. of Israel, in this way the pact they entered into was respected.

What do we learn from the covenant that Joshua made with the Gibeonites? Because if we enter into a covenant or contract with another party, our moral obligation would be to respect that agreement as long as it does not affect our worship or relationship with Jehovah, the example of Joshua makes it clear to us that despite everything we must be people with word of honor, in this way we will not only prove to be honorable people, but also good Christians.
