Stay away from sexual immorality (10 mins.)
This is a topic of great relevance in our daily lives: the need to stay away from sexual immorality.
Throughout this discourse we will meditate on several Bible verses that warn us about the dangers and consequences of this type of behavior. I invite you to reflect deeply on each point, as these teachings can protect us from unnecessary suffering and guide us to a fuller and happier life.
Sexual immorality can be very attractive
Especially when it is presented in subtle or seemingly harmless ways.
LET'S READ PROVERBS 5:3
For the lips of a backslidden woman drop honey like a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil.
Here, the wayward woman or “strange woman,” according to other translations, represents any person who, with flattery and seduction, seeks to lead us along paths that displease God. As the proverb well illustrates, his words can sound as sweet as honey and as smooth as olive oil. Perhaps, at first, we are flattered when someone pays us special attention or praises us.
This week's background information presents the example of Amy, a young 27-year-old secretary. She recounts how a co-worker constantly compliments her and shows an interest that, from her perspective, is purely sexual. As flattering as it may be, Amy has decided not to be fooled. This real example reminds us that we must use the ability to think to recognize immoral advances. This mental clarity protects us and prevents us from falling into temptations that, in the long run, could cause us pain and sadness.
On the other hand, the expression “strange woman” in the Bible also applies to the person who has decided to live far from God's principles. Hence it is related to the behavior of a prostitute. The main point is that, even if temptation presents itself in an attractive way, we must discern its true intention and not allow the softness of its words to lead us to act contrary to our values.
Sexual immorality has bitter consequences
After the initial apparent sweetness and softness, sexual immorality has bitter consequences. This is stated in the following text.
LET'S READ PROVERBS 5:4-5
But it ends up being bitter like wormwood and sharp like a two-edged sword. 5His feet go down to death. His steps go straight to the Tomb.
The Bible forcefully describes the fate of those who allow themselves to be carried away by infidelity and adultery. The consequences can be as bitter as wormwood, a plant with a very bitter taste, and as painful as a double-edged sword.
What types of wounds can we experience?
An uneasy conscience: feelings of guilt and remorse can accompany those who commit immoral acts, affecting their inner peace.
An unwanted pregnancy: many people face surprise pregnancies that drastically alter their life plans and put their responsibility to the test.
Sexually transmitted diseases: these diseases can cause serious damage to health and even take the life of those who suffer from them.
Emotional pain in the family: The cheated on spouse often experiences an emotional wound so deep that it can take years to heal, if it can be overcome at all.
These consequences clearly show that if we allow ourselves to be carried away by immoral insinuations, bitterness and suffering will be inevitable, no matter how sweet and pleasant it may seem at first. Every outcome of infidelity leaves a bitter taste and consequences that, sometimes, last a lifetime.
Stay away from sexual immorality
So what to do? The answer is found in the following text.
LET'S READ PROVERBS 5:8
Stay away from her and don't go near the entrance to her house.
Staying away from sexual immorality means avoiding any situation that could put us at risk. This covers not only physical encounters, but also the consumption of content that promotes immoral behavior. For example, why expose ourselves to degrading music or shows and movies that trivialize or promote adultery, casual sex or pornography? Likewise, it would be foolish to attract the attention of people with dishonest intentions by flirting or dressing provocatively. Let us remember that God values modesty and dignity. Such qualities not only honor His will, but also protect us from giving rise to situations that could harm our lives and the lives of others.
The Bible exhorts us to learn to control our desires and honor our relationships. Staying away from sexual immorality does not mean giving up the happiness or beauty of true love; rather, it involves protecting something very valuable: our conscience, our emotional and physical health, and our relationship or future relationship.
When we exercise prudence and loyalty, we demonstrate sincere love for others and deep respect for ourselves and God. In this way, we avoid the painful repercussions that come with breaking divine principles. Let us remember that the emotional wounds and guilt that derive from infidelity can accompany us for a long time, but the decision to remain faithful to moral values frees us from those burdens.
Looking at the photograph in our activity guide, we perceive a scene in which two young people, apparently schoolmates, are having a tense exchange. We could imagine that behind these gestures and words there are issues as delicate as pressure, misunderstandings or even inappropriate advances. In daily life, scenes like this remind us that temptation or the opportunity to commit acts contrary to morality can occur anywhere: at work, at school, among friends and even within the family. Our reaction to such situations must be based on a firm determination to protect our principles.
Just as Amy knew how to recognize that her coworker's compliments had a sexual undertone, each of us can identify the subtle traps that put our integrity at risk. It is vital that, just as the proverb advises, we stay away from the door of immorality, avoiding conversations or environments that could lead us into error.
The photograph symbolizes the importance of setting clear boundaries and speaking up without fear when something threatens our moral righteousness. If we act with wisdom and prudence, we can protect our hearts and those of the people we love, thus honoring the biblical principles that promote purity and respect in relationships.
