“You forgave my error and my sins” (Ps. 32:5).

1, 2. What does Jehovah do when we repent, and how does that make us feel? (See also the picture.)

When we sincerely repent, Jehovah not only forgives us, but completely blots out our sins, as if they had never existed. This is what King David experienced. Although he felt overwhelmed by guilt, when he acknowledged his mistake and asked for forgiveness, Jehovah cleansed him. This restored his peace and happiness.

The same thing happens to us. Even though our sins may make us feel terrible at first, Jehovah's forgiveness brings relief, hope, and the peace of mind of a clear conscience. It's as if a heavy burden has been lifted from our shoulders. Knowing that God doesn't hold grudges and can erase even serious mistakes fills us with gratitude and motivates us to move forward with even greater love for him.

3, 4. How did Jennifer feel? What will we cover in this article?

Jennifer grew up in the truth, but as a teenager she led a double life marked by materialism, immorality, and bad habits. Later, she repented and returned to Jehovah. She knew in her mind that Christ's sacrifice had cleansed her, but her heart couldn't be convinced; she still harbored feelings of guilt.

This experience reflects what many of us experience: even though Jehovah has already forgiven us, it's sometimes difficult to accept it emotionally. Therefore, this article will help us achieve what David did: to be convinced that Jehovah has shown us mercy.

We'll see why it's so important to trust in that forgiveness and what practical tools can help us align our hearts with the reality that Jehovah has indeed forgiven us and wants us to remember it.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO CONVINCE OURSELVES THAT JEHOVAH HAS FORGIVEN US?

5. What does Satan want us to believe? Give an example.

Satan wants us to believe that we have sinned so gravely that Jehovah can never forgive us. A clear example is that of the brother in Corinth: he fell into sexual immorality and was expelled, but later repented. Even so, Satan wanted the congregation to refuse to accept him back, so that he would think his sin was unforgivable and end up leaving God's service out of sadness.

That's Satan's tactic: to sow doubt about God's mercy. But the Bible warns us not to ignore his schemes. If we maintain the conviction that Jehovah forgives, we won't fall into that trap and can continue serving with confidence, without letting guilt paralyze us.

6. What will help us free ourselves from the weight of guilt?

What frees us from the burden of guilt is being convinced that Jehovah has truly forgiven us. It's normal to feel pain and shame when we sin, because it motivates us to change and do what's right.

But if we continue to carry guilt after repenting, it can discourage us and even make us consider giving up. However, when we accept Jehovah's forgiveness, we can turn the page and serve him with joy and a clear conscience.

In this way, we avoid spiritual paralysis and regain the strength to continue growing. Jehovah doesn't want us to live mired in guilt, but rather to worship him with joy, thankful that he has already cleansed us through Christ.

WHAT CAN HELP YOU CONVINCE YOURSELF THAT JEHOVAH HAS FORGIVEN YOU?

7, 8. How was Jehovah described in Exodus 34:6, 7, and what assurance does that give us?

In Exodus 34:6 and 7, Jehovah describes himself as a merciful and compassionate God. Of all the qualities he could have highlighted, he chose to show himself as someone full of tenderness and willing to forgive.

This gives us great assurance, because if we repent from the heart, it's impossible for Jehovah to act coldly or cruelly, rejecting our forgiveness. He always tells the truth, so we can fully trust that this is his way of being.

When we meditate on this passage, we remember that we are no exception. If Jehovah is merciful and compassionate toward all who repent, he is also merciful to you and me. This strengthens our faith in his loyal love and helps us stop doubting his forgiveness, even if it's difficult.

9. What does Psalm 32:5 teach us about Jehovah’s way of forgiving?

Psalm 32:5 shows that Jehovah's forgiveness is like lifting a heavy burden from our shoulders. David confessed his sins, and Jehovah forgave them, which in Hebrew also means "to lift" or "to carry." David felt relief and happiness when he received forgiveness.

We too, when we sincerely repent, can let go of that burden of guilt. Jehovah not only cleanses us, but also completely removes the weight that was crushing us, and with it we regain inner peace.

This image teaches us that, although our hearts sometimes want to remind us of our mistakes, Jehovah has already removed them. If he has lifted them up and carried them away, we don't have to continue carrying them as if they were still there.

10, 11. What does Psalm 86:5 teach us about Jehovah?

Psalm 86:5 teaches us that Jehovah is “ready to forgive,” because forgiveness is part of his very nature. He does not do so grudgingly or half-heartedly, but rather motivated by his immense, loyal love for those who seek him in sincere repentance.

This willingness doesn't depend on what we've done in the past, but on His enduring love for us. Furthermore, the verse emphasizes that His loyal love is deep and constant, assuring us that we can always count on His mercy.

Jehovah knows our imperfection and understands us better than anyone. Therefore, when we feel doubtful about whether we have been forgiven, this text reminds us that if we ask in faith, we can be sure that He has already forgiven us.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT

This psalm teaches us that Jehovah is always willing to forgive. Therefore, no matter how serious our past sins may have been, he knows us, understands us, and will always show us his loyal love. Therefore, if we sincerely repent, we can count on his forgiveness.

REMEMBER ONLY WHAT JEHOVAH REMEMBERS

12, 13. According to Psalm 103:14, what does Jehovah remember and what does he feel compelled to do?

Psalm 103:14 says that Jehovah “remembers that we are dust.” This is not just a detail, but a powerful reason to trust in his forgiveness.

Jehovah knows how we are formed; he remembers that we are imperfect and that we inherited the inclination to sin from Adam. But the important thing is that this memory doesn't lead him to condemn us, but rather to show us mercy.

The term “remembers” in Hebrew implies action: not only does he remember our weakness, but he acts on our behalf, forgiving us when we repent.

It's like a loving father who understands the limitations of his young children. That understanding helps us accept that, even when we fail, Jehovah wants to lift us up and treat us with tenderness.

14. (a) What does Psalm 103:12 teach us about Jehovah’s way of forgiveness?

Psalm 103:12 teaches us that when Jehovah forgives, he does so completely, leaving no trace of sin. The text says he removes our transgressions “as far as the east is from the west.”

This expression has no physical boundary, because east and west never meet, which underscores that his forgiveness is total and infinite. Jehovah doesn't keep a hidden record to later throw it in our face; rather, he chooses to forget and erase our error from his memory.

This gives us great peace of mind: when He forgives, we can truly start over. Just as David felt clean after confessing his sins, we too can trust that Jehovah will not bring them back.

14. b) How does David’s example show that Jehovah’s forgiveness is complete? (See the box “Jehovah Forgives and Forgets.”)

David's example demonstrates that Jehovah's forgiveness is complete, because, despite having committed very serious sins—such as adultery and murder—when he sincerely repented, he received complete forgiveness.

Years later, Jehovah never again mentioned these faults to him, but described him as a faithful and upright king, and even promised that his descendants would have a permanent kingdom.

This confirms that when Jehovah forgives, he doesn't hold on to resentment or continue reminding us of the past; he cleanses it up and forgets it for good.

For us, this example is very valuable, because it shows that even serious sins, if there is genuine repentance, will not prevent us from enjoying a close relationship with Jehovah.

15. What can we do if we still feel guilty about past sins?

If we continue to carry the guilt of sins already forgiven, Psalm 103 can help convict our hearts. Jehovah reminds us that we are imperfect, yet he forgives us when we sincerely repent.

Furthermore, He chooses to forget those sins and never holds them against us. If He, the perfect Judge, doesn't hold a grudge, why should we?

Meditating on this helps us let go of the past and forgive ourselves. Once we accept that Jehovah has forgiven us, we can move forward with a clear conscience.

By letting go of that guilt, we can also serve him with greater joy and freedom, instead of being tied to painful memories that Jehovah has already erased from our memory.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT

If Jehovah has already forgiven and forgotten our past sins, which we have repented of, we should not continue to remember them either. We must accept his forgiveness, forgive ourselves, and move on.

16. Why is it so dangerous to obsess over past mistakes? (See also the image.)

Obsessing over past mistakes is dangerous because it can prevent us from giving our best to Jehovah. It's like driving with only the rearview mirror in mind: we don't move forward safely or enjoy the journey.

Reflecting on our mistakes from time to time helps us learn from them and avoid repeating them. But living trapped in the past fills us with unnecessary guilt and drains us spiritually.

Jehovah wants us to keep our eyes fixed on what lies ahead: the blessings of the new world, where bad things will no longer be remembered.

If we continue to obsess, he achieves his goal: to hold us back and make us feel unworthy. Therefore, the wise thing to do is to learn, turn the page, and look to the future with confidence in Jehovah.

KEEP CONVINCING YOUR HEART

17. Why do we need to keep convincing our hearts that Jehovah loves us and forgives us?

We must continue to convince our hearts that Jehovah loves and forgives us, because Satan will never stop attacking that trust. His goal is to sow doubt and cause us to abandon our service to God.

Revelation 12:12 says he knows his time is short; therefore, he redoubles his attempts to make us feel worthless to Jehovah. If we allow ourselves to be drawn into these thoughts, we might give up. But if we continue to nourish the conviction that Jehovah does love us and forgive us, we can resist these lies.

Convincing ourselves again and again strengthens our faith, gives us spiritual stability, and prevents the enemy's schemes from separating us from our Father's loyal love.

18. What can you do to convince yourself that Jehovah loves you and has forgiven you?

We can be convinced by meditating on how Jehovah describes himself: merciful, compassionate, and forgiving. We can also review what the Bible teaches about his way of forgiving: completely, generously, and without holding a grudge.

Remembering that we are imperfect and that He tenderly takes this into account helps us be more compassionate toward ourselves. Furthermore, praying with confidence, reviewing examples like David's, and reflecting on how Jehovah treats his repentant servants strengthens faith.

If we do this, we can feel the same way David did when he said with gratitude, “You forgave my error and my sins.” This assurance will allow us to serve Jehovah with joy and without the shackles of guilt.
